Looking after your grandson for a weekend can be pure joy. Laughter, cuddles, impromptu snacks… Nothing beats those moments. That's what I thought when Virginie, my daughter-in-law, asked me to look after Noah for two days. She was going to the spa with some friends. Meanwhile, I was already picturing myself baking cookies with my little chef, running around the park, and then ending the day under a blanket watching cartoons.
Everything went wonderfully. Noah laughed, ate pancakes, and brought home sand-filled shoes. I took care of everything: cleaning, laundry, dishes, homemade meals. I went to bed with a light heart. Having a role in one's childhood is a privilege.
Then, on Monday morning, a surprise awaited me on the counter. A small piece of paper. Not a kind word. Not a thank you. A bill. Yes, a bill: 40 euros for what she called "maintenance fees." And, to top it all off: a line item for the toilet paper used.
