The Birth of the Fish Crib
Fishermen soon realized this natural game of survival and decided to help. They began piling sticks and logs in the water, creating safe zones where young fish could thrive. This simple, brilliant idea gave birth to the fish crib.
By the 1950s, anglers and fisheries experimented with artificial habitats to strengthen fish populations in lakes and reservoirs.
A Fort Beneath the Surface
Like children building pillow forts, early fish cribs were made from logs, branches, rocks, or whatever materials were handy. Fishermen quickly noticed that young fish flocked to these structures for protection.
The woven wood and rock cribs offered cover from predators and attracted algae, insects, and other food. Essentially, each crib became a tiny underwater ecosystem, giving young fish the shelter they needed to grow strong.
