Grief is a strange companion. It doesn’t knock, doesn’t ask permission, and once it moves in, it rearranges everything. For many older adults, losing a child, a spouse, or a lifelong friend doesn’t just hurt—it shakes the very foundation of life. What once felt solid suddenly feels fragile. What once felt like home can begin to feel like a museum of memories and echoes.
But grief, as cruel as it is, can also become a teacher. It strips away what is unimportant and forces us to confront what truly matters. It can harden a heart—or, if we’re willing, it can soften it, making room for compassion, humility, and love we didn’t know we still had.
This is how I learned, far too late, that a home is not just bricks and a roof. It’s the people inside it, the love they bring, and the choices we make when our hearts are broken.
