By the time Rebecca was four months pregnant, she expected Jack to start making good on his promises. Instead, everything changed with one unexpected phone call.
The Call That Changed Everything
One evening around nine, Rebecca’s phone rang. The number wasn’t saved in her contacts. She almost ignored it, but something compelled her to answer.
On the other end was a calm, steady voice.
“Hi, Rebecca. This is Kate… Jack’s wife.”
Only, as Rebecca would soon learn, she wasn’t exactly his wife anymore.
“I braced myself for yelling, insults—something dramatic,” Rebecca recalls. “But she wasn’t like that at all. She was composed. Almost gentle.”
Kate told her she knew about the affair. She knew about the pregnancy. She didn’t lash out or accuse. Instead, she asked for something unexpected: a meeting.
“I don’t blame you,” Kate said. “I just want to talk. There’s something important you should know.”
Against every anxious instinct, Rebecca agreed. She didn’t tell Jack. She didn’t warn him. She grabbed her keys and drove to the café where they’d arranged to meet.
“Looking back, I wish I’d been more prepared,” she admits. “But curiosity—and maybe a need for the truth—won.”
Meeting the Woman He Swore He Didn’t Love
When Rebecca walked into the café, she spotted Kate immediately. She was not the person Jack had described.
Instead of being frumpy or bitter, Kate looked composed and attractive, with a quiet strength about her. But it wasn’t just Kate sitting at the table. Two kids were with her—a teenage girl and a younger boy.
Lily and Randall. Jack’s children.
“My stomach dropped,” Rebecca says. “They smiled at me like I was just a friend of their mom’s. They had no idea how entangled we all were.”
Then came the moment Rebecca will never forget.
Kate turned to her children and said, with calm honesty, “This is Rebecca. Your dad’s mistress.”
No yelling. No scene. Just the truth, laid bare.
A Proposal—and a Secret Revealed
Once the shock settled, Kate got straight to the point. She’d known about Jack’s infidelity for years, she explained. His affairs were not new. What was new was the baby.
“Your pregnancy changes things,” Kate told her. “That’s why I reached out. I have a proposal. Just listen before you decide anything.”
Before she could continue, Lily spoke up.
Looking directly at Rebecca, she said, “We want to meet our baby sister.”
Rebecca felt frozen in place.
“She was so sincere,” Rebecca recalls. “No sarcasm, no anger. Just this open, hopeful look.”
Then Kate dropped another revelation: she and Jack had already divorced—five months earlier.
“I felt the ground shift,” Rebecca says. “All this time, he’d let me think he was still figuring things out. Still ‘working on leaving.’ But he was already gone. He just hadn’t told me.”
Kate’s request was simple. She wanted her children to know their sibling. She didn’t want the baby raised in secrecy or shame.
“She said the child deserved a family,” Rebecca explains. “Not whispers and cover-ups.”
When Children Show More Grace Than Adults
Rebecca had braced herself for resentment from the kids. After all, she was the other woman—the one carrying their father’s child.
Instead, she was met with warmth.
“Lily told me she already loved the baby,” Rebecca says. “She wanted to help, to be a big sister. Randall said he hoped it was a girl so he could protect her.”
For the first time in months, Rebecca felt something soften inside her.
“I realized they weren’t focused on the betrayal,” she says. “They were focused on the future.”
A Crossroads
Rebecca left the café overwhelmed—torn between guilt, confusion, and a strange new sense of hope.
To this day, she hasn’t told Jack about the meeting.
“I don’t know how he’ll react,” she admits. “He hid his divorce from me. What else hasn’t he said?”
Now, with her baby’s arrival getting closer, Rebecca is forced to think beyond her relationship with Jack. Her decisions will shape not only her life, but her child’s—and perhaps the lives of Lily and Randall, too.
“Part of me wants to walk away and raise this baby alone,” she confesses. “But then I remember the way those kids looked at me. The way Kate chose grace over fury. And I wonder if this doesn’t have to end in bitterness.”
Healing After Heartbreak
Rebecca’s story is messy, complicated, and far from the fairy tale she once imagined. But it’s also a story about growth.
“I’m not proud of every choice I made,” she says. “But I’m trying to do better now. For myself, for my baby, and for everyone caught in this.”
She doesn’t know exactly what her relationship with Kate, Lily, and Randall will look like in the future, but she’s certain of one thing: they gave her something precious that night in the café.
They showed her grace when they had every reason to choose anger.
And sometimes, grace is the first step toward starting over.
